Swansea Tidal Lagoon – Jobs and Independence

logoIn the planning stages for years, the propsed Tidal Lagoon in Swansea bay looks to be starting the formal planning and development stage. The potential of the project is fantastic – the proposed design will provide enough power for every home in Swansea, giving us the independence that we need from imported energy. Along with this comes an estimated 3600 jobs for the construction and design (scheduled to start in 2017), plus the added longer-term jobs in maintenance and tourism that will be created.

The question remains now of whether the project will be able to get off the ground, in terms of both finance and planning. Whilst the environmental impacts are said to be very minimal, further investigation could throw in any number of problems. The funding for the project has so far been limited to a few large investors, with the company now offering shares to the public until the 15th of July, with a target of close to £8million. Whether or not the company will be able to reach this ambitious target remains to be seen, but the benefits of the this project for the people of Swansea could far outstrip risk.

The Tidal lagoon is not a green solution – ecologically a real problem for the bay and river, heavy metals in sediments will be mobilised, will look hideous 10m wall, will be closes as local lads will be out drinking and drowning and kids falling off and there won’t be any sports inside lagoon due to sewage, litter and pollution! Company has green washed so many! Hope not you!

    • Hi Richard
Sorry for the delay in response. The previous Admin left ages ago and only recently handed over the site to me.

We have an active Green Party in Swansea and Gower, and we secured 5% which means we kept our deposit for the first time in Swansea West. We are already working hard to build on that tiny step towards success for the Welsh Assembly Election next May.

Here is our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SwanseaAndGowerGreenParty/
      and our official website http://swansea.greenparty.org.uk/

This WordPress site is essentially for historic references only now.

I understand your concerns about the Tidal Lagoon. We had a presentation from the Tidal Lagoon Chief Exec recently, most of the concerns you raised above have been addressed by the project design team. However our outstanding concern is related to the Dean Quarry in Cornwall, where the rock is to be sourced.

We have discussed this at length in the local party meetings, feel free to come along and join in. We will be in upstairs in Noah’s Yard this evening.
